Classified Tutorial

Maybe your wonder why your ad didn't turn out formatted as you liked it to be. Or your wondering what you need to do to create a great looking ad.

This little tutorial will have you creating great looking ads in minutes. For this  tutorial  we will be concentrating on the ad detail area and the formatting and layout of the text inside your ad. As an example we will use a real ad placed in the classifieds Clubs, Shows and Organizations Category by the Nebraska Tractor Test Museum.

The simple yet informative ad looks like this:

When:

Where:
University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus
35th & Fair Streets

jsteele4@unl.edu

Immortalized Tractors from 1907.

Retro Tractors from 1982
Revolutionary Tractors from 2007

Make plans to show your tractor and/or attend this event on Saturday, April 21st 2007.

Simple HTML

To create the above classified ad along with  its exact formatting it is required that you use three Basic HTML TAGS. Without these simple tags inserted into the above classified the ad formatting would look as follows:

Nebraska Tractor Test Reunion - Larsen Museum Open House When: Saturday, April 21st 10:00am - 5:00pm Where: University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus 35th & Fair Streets Contact: Jeremy Steele 1-402-472-8389 jsteele4@unl.edu All tractors are welcome to be displayed throughout the day. Contact museum for registration details. Featured Tractors of 2007 are of the following categories: Immortalized Tractors from 1907. Petrified Tractors from 1932 Rustic Tractors from 1957 Retro Tractors from 1982 Revolutionary Tractors from 2007 Make plans to show your tractor and/or attend this event on Saturday, April 21st 2007.

Okay, it's time to look at the three basic tags that changed the ad so dramatically

<B></B>This is the tag for bold text. Example:
<B> Nebraska Tractor Test </B>This will show up on your Classified Ad like this:
Nebraska Tractor Test

Next

<I></I> This is the tag for Italics Example:
<I> Nebraska Tractor Test.</I> This will show up on your Classified Ad like this:
Nebraska Tractor Test

Or together

<B><I></B></I> The two tag together  Example:
<B><I>Nebraska Tractor Test</B></I> This will show up on your Classified Ad like this:
Nebraska Tractor Test.

And lastly but probably most important to your ad readability

The line break. The tag for a line break is <BR>. When you insert this tag in your Classified Ad, the contents will go to the next line. The <BR> tag does not need a closing tag afterward. Here is an example:
Nebraska Tractor <BR>Test
This will generate the following:

Nebraska Tractor
Test

Basically, a line break is like hitting the "enter" key when you are writing text. The browser will not go to the next line until it runs out of space, or sees a tag that will force it to the next line. So typing the following in your text editor will display only one line of text in the browser:
Hello,
I want
a new line.
This gives us:

Hello, I want a new line.

To make the text move to the next line, use your <BR> tag from above:
Hello,<BR>
I want<BR>
a new line.
Now this will do what we wanted it to:

Hello,
I want
a new line.
